Weight loss is one of the top reasons people want to try hypnotherapy. There’s a common misconception that it’s an easy way to loose weight, you loose the lbs without having to put much effort in and the Hypnotherapist does all the hard work for you. And if that’s why you’ve come to read this blog, I’m very sorry to burst your bubble but that’s not how hypnotherapy for weight loss works.
It’s not a miracle cure, if it was Hypnotherapists would be millionaires and the NHS would be prescribing sessions to save themselves a few billion too.
The only way to lose weight and body fat is from a calorie deficit, this is where you burn more calories than you eat so your body uses fat reserves to power you. However it never feels that easy does it? Losing weight isn’t a smooth journey, there are ups and downs, and it can be hard to reach your goal on your own.
There are lots of things out there that claim to help you with your weight loss journey; apps, trackers, challenges, groups, classes and more. But the majority of people still won’t reach their goal weight because they don’t work on their emotional connection with food and their body.
Overeating often masks an emotional issue that the client isn’t aware of until it’s uncovered during therapy. A lot of us will use food as a coping mechanism to deal with unresolved issues.
Hypnotherapy for weight loss can help you understand the emotional trigger that causes you to overeat and stops you from reaching your weight loss goals. During the initial consultation we’ll talk through your relationship with food both as an adult and as a child. We’re often told things like ‘you can’t go and play until you’ve eaten everything on your plate’ or ‘you need to finish your dinner if you want to grow up big and strong’ and these messages can stay with us and impact the relationship we have with food as adults.
We’ll also look at what could be the cause of your overeating. Hypnotherapy is really effective for supporting weight loss for those that;
Eat to celebrate our achievements
Use food as a distraction
Use food as a symbol of love
We will also agree which approach to weight loss hypnotherapy would work best for you. There are three main approaches that I offer clients; Exercise Focus We build new habits and positive though processes to help you create, maintain and improve exercise regimes so you can burn more calories to support your weight loss Diet Focus Once we understand what triggers you to turn to a certain food or food group we can then amend your minds reaction to those triggers and create a new reaction. For example if you turn to crisps when you experience work stress, we can work on replacing the crisps with going for a walk. Food Aversion We can retrain your brain so that you no longer like or crave a food that is sabotaging your weight loss efforts. For example if you currently struggle to control yourself around crisps, we could train your brain to think you actually dislike crisps.
During the initial consultation I will also need you to share your current weight with me, and your GP’s details. I will not contact your GP without discussing it with you first, and the only reason I would ask you if I could contact them would be if I had serious concerns for your wellbeing.
All of this information will then be the foundation for your bespoke treatment plan. This will also give you a rough idea of how many sessions we will have together and how we will measure our success. No two treatment plans are the same. It will be completely bespoke and tailored to your exact goals and preferences.
